The Birth of the Second Reich is Celebrated at Versailles

January 18, 1871 is the official date of birth of the German Empire (with Wilhelm I as Emperor) also called the Second Reich (the first Reich had been the Holy Roman Empire 962-1806) and will last until the end of the First World War.

The idea of a united Germany was born during the revolutionary movements of 1848 (movements present throughout Europe). Unity was necessary to free the economic development blocked by too many internal borders and customs. Before the Unification there were different peoples:

  • Saxons
  • Babares
  • Swabians
  • Frisians
  • Prussians etc.
all the peoples with German blood, once united they would become all Germans. The empire was a Confederation of 25 sovereign states to which Alsace and Lorraine would be added, the two regions ceded by France to Germany after the War of Sedan won by the Germans in 1871

THE FRENCH REVENGE

The ceremony of the Constitution of the new Germany was celebrated on January 18, 1871 in the royal palace of Versailles, symbol of the French monarchy. In addition to the military defeat, it was a great humiliation for the French, so much so that, 50 years later at the end of the great war, the French demanded that the armistice between victorious France and defeated Germany be signed in the same French royal palace.

If in 1870 France, which had lost the war (against Prussia) had to cede the two border regions of Alsace and Lorraine, in 1919 Germany had to return the same two regions to France
